Austin Poynter

Austin- full tilt lien

Austin Poynter. 2011 & 2012 Amatuer Protec Champion. A new age dawning. Confidence and calm. Austin put on a brave face in January at the Vans/Protec Am contest. He sat and talked with friends. He appeared relaxed. Not a care in the world. When it came time to take his contest runs, things were a bit different. He rode with a maturity beyond his years. Style. Power. He utilized the entire Combi… every hip, every wall, every nuance.  Austin rode the pool.  It wasn’t the other way around. He is a weapon to safeguard the future of my beloved vertical skateboarding. He’s a young gun with a bright and shiny destiny. I questioned him on the Protec and the gleaming future on his horizon.

I asked Austin about vert contests and bowl contests. We discussed his preference and preparation. Austin- “I love bowl contests. They are my favorite. As far as preparation, I just spend a great deal of time practicing. I always get nervous before a contest so I usually have to take a moment to myself and mellow out my breathing. I’m actually thinking of wearing my Ipod to drown out the crowd and stuff.” Austin went on to talk about tricks and things he likes to do. I questioned him regarding lines and combinations. “I love lien airs and back tail slides. I really want to get back Smiths but haven’t got around to them yet. I’m also going to start working on variations of the 540.” Austin pointed out that he tries to work on consistency and maintaining speed and power. As far a list of influences on his skating, Austin didn’t hesitate one bit-  ”Chris Miller, Peter Hewitt and Alex Perelson.”

I want to wish Austin Poynter good luck and thank him for taking the time with us. Thank you to MRZ for the image. Skate- Ozzie
